BE A FIGHTER

“If you are getting bored, procrastinating or simply not moving towards your dreams, chances are you are not moving fast enough. Get started and keep going.”
Today, I want to take the roof off the so called ceiling of what ‘might’ be possible for you or, what ‘you would really really like to do’ but haven’t done so yet.
Why?
Simply put – because it’s frustrating to not fulfil your human potential and it’s a lie to think you are not good enough, it’s a lie to think that you can’t do something.
“The biggest waste of all is the waste of a persons true potential.”
We wrap our reasons for NOT doing something in fluffy pillows and we get our friends, family members and colleagues to believe us too, almost as if we NEED confirmation that we ‘shouldn’t’ be reaching for our goals. You know exactly how this sounds, “I really want to get in the best shape of my life but I have 2 kids to look after,” or “yeah, I would love to start my own business but I don’t know anything about business,” or “I don’t have the money that’s why I am not doing XY or Z.” The person we are speaking to at the time out of compassion says something like “yeah, I understand where you are coming from,” and at that point – dream is over, you forget you ever even had it and we drink our coffee and talk about the weather, work or some other conversation that we know is one within our comfort zone.
I am not stating that ‘being in our comfort zone’ is wrong, believe me, I love a good film at the cinema or meeting a friend for a catch up and chat. Yet, we have to be real here and know that the rest of the time these REASONS we give ourselves NOT to do something do their job extremely well, they stop us in our tracks and allow us to continue living as if our life isn’t really all that important, so long as we can pay the bills and get through the another week right?
You want to be successful in whatever field you choose, get in the best shape of your life or simply be an amazing partner to the person you love and you know in return they love you too then the one thing you must know is that you have to take serious and committed action!
I firmly believe that love is a verb and this is why you have to ‘find the love’ that’s in you and go for it, whatever ‘it’ is in your life.
(I got this tattoo when I climbed out of the pit of struggle and difficult times. What got me through? I kept hearing a quiet voice that said three words which were 'find the love.' This reminds me constantly that there is always love in every circumstance, but you need to see it, feel it from within.)
Too many of us are sitting on the fence of success ‘thinking’ about doing that great business idea, learning a new skill, language or just asking that girl or guy out.
Does the short term pain of doing something really outweigh the long term pain of not doing something?
So, let’s get down to it. We are really good at coming up with reasons (or excuses) of why not to do something, let’s kick these excuses out of our life and look at 30 reasons to keep fighting for your dreams.
1) When you achieve your dream you will feel that sense of amazing accomplishment, like you climbed a mountain and now you get to see the world from a whole new perspective! Perhaps your dream is to climb a mountain, if it is what are you doing today to make sure that happens for you?
2) Deep deep down we all have a connection with the universe and we know the most fulfilling dreams are the one’s that make a difference on this little third rock from the sun called Earth. Imagine if you started taking action TODAY towards what you REALLY want and within a period of time, you helped someone else to live a better life in some way shape or form. Who knows, your dream could change thousands, even millions of people’s lives for the better. So let me ask you this “why in the world are you DELAYING doing something?” Go be the difference maker because this world has plenty of people bringing it down, be the light.
3) It will make you the best person you can possibly be and some more. Yep, sitting at home watching TV isn’t going to inspire you to be great! Yeah, you may live an ok life, perhaps even a good one but seriously, when you are fighting and working towards your dreams you will start separating yourself from the masses, you will create a certain individuality and there is nothing better than knowing that each day is another day that the universe has given you to take another step in the direction of being GREAT.
4) You will live forever. What!? I hear you say. Yes, you will live forever! Do you seriously believe that we are defined by our internal organs, blood cells, brains and bones? Come on, we are so much more powerful beings than this and to believe that is like believing Father Christmas is going to come down the chimney when you don’t even have a fireplace!
This is how it works, when you are in true pursuit of what you are capable of, when you start to make a difference in your community and dare I say ‘the world.’ Your work will live beyond your years! Look at the greats of all time, Mother Theresa, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill. Ok, you may not have the same claim to fame legacy as these people but there are thousands of people making a difference in what THEY are passionate about every day. It’s not about being a rock star of success. Just be you, in your best possible way and let your work be your legacy.
5) You will sleep less and have FAR more energy!! Remember when you booked that amazing holiday and you had to wake up at 4.00 am to get to the airport? You got yourself out of bed right and your bags were packed ready to go? Did you then fly half way round the world to check in and sleep for 12 hours? Of course not, you probably hit the beach or at least went to checked out your hotel local area.
What I am stating here with this ‘reason’ for fighting for your dreams is that when you are living your life with some purpose, when you ‘find the love’ you won’t need that alarm clock so much because you will have a POWERFUL reason to start your day for yourself!
When we are just doing our 9 till 5 and living our life in that safe zone with everything else of course it’s going to be a struggle to get up in the mornings, of course by the weekend the week will have kicked your backside and you’ll need some rest.
Living your dream, fighting for it, well that makes every day an adventure.
6) As soon as you decide to open your own business, start a charity organization, fly to a remote part of the world where your skills can help people guess what? YOU ARE ALREADY LIVING YOUR DREAM! (Caps essential.) Why? Because your thoughts are PHYSICAL in the universe and that’s why I have always tried to be conscious of ‘being careful of the conversations in my mind because they are a conversation with the universe.’
We know already that positive thinking is a good thing, being negative never helped anyone. However, on a deeper level today we must be aware that everything that has ever been invented or done by a human being good or bad started as a thought.
Never, ever underestimate the power of your thinking.
7) You will meet people who will change your life forever. When you tune into what you truly want and you take committed action, in turn you will also open the doors for people to come into your life. Some of which will be there to teach you something, some will be there to simply help you and will ask for nothing in return.
Why does this happen? Because when you attach yourself to a goal that adds value to this earth on any size or scale, the universe knows you are making a difference and will give you unlimited resources to achieve what it is you want. Some of these resources will come in the form of people.
8) You will learn to recognise the good people who are in your life/come into your life versus the toxic one’s more quickly and effectively. Yes, it’s unfortunate but when you decide to really go for something not everyone will want to go with you. In fact, many people will look at you and want what you want (even if you have nothing other than a powerful purpose,) they will still want it and the only way they can get some of what you have is by taking from you to make them feel better about themselves. If only someone would tell them that it doesn’t work that way!
Watch out for toxic people, when you start something amazing, they will show up too. However, if we want no conflict in our lives then just do nothing. That’s why the majority of people choose to live life completely in the safe zone.
9) You will ascertain the skills and confidence to deal with toxic people. You didn’t think I would leave you with just the last point did you?
Skills and confidence are the two words I feel are most relevant to dealing with toxic people who want to bring you down. Skills are the ability to SEE with eyes wide open a toxic person and their true intentions. Confidence is in KNOWING you can use these skills to eliminate toxic people from your life before they do any damage.
The great thing when you close the door for toxic people is that in turn, another door opens for great people who add and multiply to who you are as a person and you can do the same for them. That’s a great relationship, whether it be business, friendship or life partner.
10) You will get really really smart. The chances are that your dream means overcoming a lot of challenges to reach it, problem solving and thinking on your feet. This is a good thing because this gives your mind a chance to be used more laterally than it can ever be when a person is simply surviving not thriving.
You will have sink or swim moments but if your passion is burning, even if it feels like there is no chance for you – you will find a way, it’s a law of the universe and a human/spiritual right to get there eventually.
11) You will inspire others to do live their dreams too. Now, you may not do this consciously but just you, being you in your best possible way will light the fire in people around you too. Think about people you have already inspired in your life, how does it feel a few days, week, months or even years later when they say you really made a difference for them as a person? When you are truly pursuing your dreams you will do this over and over again. Most people won’t even have the chance to thank you, but, do we really need to be thanked for just living our life in the best possible way we know how? I much prefer the simple ‘knowing’ what we do and who we are makes things better, even if a little.
12) Earth will be better because you were here – period.
13) If you have children or even nieces or nephews you will connect with them even better, you will inspire them in their most critical learning years. Who knows, they may even want to grow up to be just like you ;).
14) Everything will be brighter and more colourful. When we are truly inspired and living that life it’s amazing how we also find ourselves in a consistent state of ‘gratitude.’ Some people need a million pounds and they are still uninspired or ungrateful at the end of it. Some people just need the most valuable thing of all – their own true potential and ability to do something about it.
15) Small problems become exactly that, small problems. How many times have you had an argument with your husband or wife over the dishes or the dog being walked? Do you honestly believe before we came to this Earth that we were put here because we were meant to debate our way to the most effective washing up strategy?
Big dreams are usually solving BIG problems. So, for example, if you are inspired by a cause, perhaps helping to cure cancer or volunteering to help animals from being slaughtered. These are the real problems that need someone like you to be a part of. Argue to make a difference in the world, not over dishes.
Make love, not war with the person you love.
16) Life will start to surprise you every single day. When we open ourselves up to an amazing life, things start to happen that we weren’t even expecting.
Living a life of mediocrity leaves us with so many unfulfilled expectations. We didn’t get the pay rise we wanted, we didn’t get to date the girl we really liked, we didn’t win the….. you get the idea. Yet, when you give a lot more and expect nothing, funny thing is, a lot more will show up in your life.
It’s pretty cool how it works but don’t fall into the trap of giving more, getting some back and then next time expecting because you immediately block your communication with the universe.
So, just give more and let that giving be your expectation.
17) Make depression a thing of the past. Anti depressants are the most heavily prescribed drug in the western world. However, all we are doing is masking the symptom and not dealing with the cause of our depression. Now, I am not a doctor and I want to clearly state I am not recommending you go on or come off any medication. However, let’s think about this logically for a moment, depression, sadness can and does show up in our lives because things happen. Yet, long term sadness/depression is something much deeper and in order to get the fruit back on the tree of our life, we must nurture the roots.
Switch on a life of meaning, one where you are every day doing something to make that difference, is there anytime left to feel sad or depressed? Something to think about, just don’t think too long, take action.
18) Be a better lover/partner. When we are simply focused on being in a relationship because we are in that relationship, when things start to not go the way we ‘expect’ them too, it creates relationship turbulence. Yet, surely we are supposed to be with someone because we love them and they love us right? Cast your mind back, if love is a verb, it means action.
I might be old fashioned but if I am going to be with someone, I want to be the best person I can be, ambitious, funny (I am funny,) confident, caring, kind and a warrior of life. 80% of this just isn’t enough.
When we have an energy and zest for life because we are in pursuit of our dreams and even living our dreams, we also see the amazingness in our partner even more than ever before.
Warning though, if you know you are with the right person now, just don’t exclude your partner from your dream. Yes, it might be a personal dream, but you are still a team, involve, be interdependent and make time for the fun stuff to appreciate all those things you love about each other.
19) You will get to travel to places you never even dreamed about, well perhaps other than when you were dreaming about your dream.
We all know what it is like to travel on the standard full board package holiday and that’s fine. However, you may not even realise it right now but your dream may have destinations in store for you that you never thought even possible!
Have an open mind when in pursuit of your dream because you just never know.
20) You will live more in the present moment. Most people are generally worrying about what may or may not happen the future or sad/depressed about what has happened in the past. The reason for this is because when our present moment and inner voice is saying to us ‘hey you can do so much better than where you are right now, go live the life you know you can’ we also have a part of us that likes to keep us safe. It’s really the coward who lives in us and this coward absolutely HATES change and will do anything to stop you. This coward who lives inside of you will even take on your voice so you think it’s you!!! And it will say things like “I know you hate your job but it pays the bills,” or “yes it it is a good idea to start up that charity but you need your rest too! You can’t expect to work full time and get home and work some more, just switch on the TV.”
When you turn on your full potential you will start to recognise this coward for what it really is. It has no arms and no legs, all it can do is speak to you in your mind and tell you not to do things and that you ‘should’ just stay safe even if staying safe is miserable, it’s still better than taking the risk.
Being present means you are in the here and now and you have a wide vision for the potential of this moment. The coward in your head has no chance when you are present because he, she, it can only draw on past experiences of failure, disappointment or the risk of what might happen in the future. Are you with me? Get present, be here, be now and take it all in.
*Stupid coward.
21) You will become a far better writer, reader and speaker. Believe it or not, I failed everything in school and dropped out of college not once, but twice. I was told I couldn’t achieve much with my life and that I should probably just take the first job I could get and do that. I wasn’t told I should have a choice of careers.
Now, my written or spoken English might not be perfect but I have now written several e-books, over 1000 articles, I am a professional speaker and I read 2 books per week.
How did this happen? I realised when I was 22 that I loved helping people realise their full potential. I was working as a personal trainer on cruise ships and I started doing quite well. My manager asked me if I could do a 1 hour training session on business skills for the spa team and some motivation strategies. That 1 hour changed my way of thinking forever, I completely fell in love with helping people see themselves in their best possible way.
Pursue your passion, your dream, you will want to talk about it, read about it and write about it.
22) You will be more attractive! Yep, the more material we become in today’s world, the more that people are starting to return back to wanting traditional values in their relationships.
Two people pursuing their dreams and helping each other to achieve them, that’s a pretty incredible thought.
23) People will show up at your funeral. It may sound like a pretty dull thought, but try this exercise:
Think of a life of average. You do your job, come home, go on a package holiday with your family once or twice a year, you retire, you get old and you die. How many people have attended your funeral? What have they said about you? What has been said in the eulogy/funeral speech?
Think about living a life of real meaning, one where you don’t let fear get in the way of reaching your dreams. You also inspire many other people to do the same. How many people have attended your funeral now when you pass on/over? What have they said about you? What has been said in the eulogy/funeral speech?
Now, I am not saying we should judge our success by how many people attend our funeral, this is simply an exercise to get us thinking long term about what our lives REALLY mean while we are here on this planet for this very short amount of time. Are we making the most of our time?
24) Even if you never reach your dreams, you will create so many more opportunities you never even thought about before. Surprises will come in their numbers and all you need to do is ride the wave and enjoy every second.
25) Life will just be a lot more fun! It may sound big and scary to really go for what you want and yeah sure, there will be challenges along the way, but overall the feeling of knowing you are taking action each day to live an inspired life and to make a difference gives you a deep inner peace and calm which in turn allows you to just get on with enjoying every second and soaking up all the wonderful things that life is all about.
26) That word boredom can finally become a thing of the past! With so much to do without even a TV, Facebook or some other form of modern day entertainment there really is no need for boredom or even procrastination in our lives. However, these things do creep in when we are not living life on purpose. We end up thinking “well, suppose I better watch Hollyoaks,” or “my mates are off to the pub so that’s what I am going to do.”
Again, all of these things are fine in moderation but we know life is about balance. When you start filling your time with the pursuit of and living your dream, you will always find things to do that keep you entertained and you will create an even better self awareness along the way. Speaking of awareness, most people are aware, they are aware they go to work, they are aware they either like or dislike their job and the people at it, they are aware they are married, single or otherwise, they are aware they are eating a pizza and so on. What many people are not, is self aware, how do they respond in certain situations? Does their behaviour match what’s needed to help their circumstances? Are they in a sense by not fulfilling their dream which could actually help many people being selfish by not doing so? You decide.
Self awareness is a continual journey, I don’t believe in this life at least we ever become completely self aware. Even the most unaware person can be self aware in moments and even the most spiritually enlightened person can be unaware from time to time.
Overall though, being self aware can help us sail in the direction we want in our lives and also go with the wave, not against it. This sense of self awareness can also help us through so many of life’s challenges we are all faced with.
Pursuit of goals and dreams only helps us to look at ourselves with a more astute mind and eye.
28) There will be no need for waiting for something to happen to give us permission to feel good about ourselves! This one is the real winner! Whenever we say ‘when this happens’ or ‘when that happens’ we actually are also saying we are only accepting that we can be truly happy when that thing shows up but hold on a second, what if it doesn’t show up? Well, that’s when we become disappointed. Sound familiar?
Living a life of purpose and of a great goal will mean you always have something to do, little victories along the way and the joy is in the doing, the result although a great bonus is just a bonus.
Doing great work gives great joy.
29) You might even save someone’s life. When we really tap into great work, we must also know the profound impact we have on the people our work touches. Perhaps you have heard of the butterfly effect before? Well, basically the butterfly effect is when a single stroke of a butterflies wings on one side of the world can build and build and over time and distance create a great storm on the other side of the world.
Your work is important, you are important; your impact in this world is crucial for the lives of other people. It’s in fact, so important, it’s difficult for me even to put into words.
It really doesn’t matter what your dream is, so long as you feel in your soul that it’s the work YOU are meant to do, the rest will take care of itself, so long as you take action and don’t just say you will. You have to be the difference that makes a difference in your life first.
30) You find the UNIQUENESS in everything. SAMENESS is the biggest killer of all. I recently boarded a flight and sat next to a businessman and we stuck up conversation pretty quickly. He then mentioned that I seemed 'pretty excited about the flight.' To which I responded 'oh my goodness, metal thing with wings about to fly 40,000 feet up in the air and take us around the world!' He responded by saying 'I wish I shared some of your excitement but I just take this flight all the time for business so I guess I am used to it.' This comment confused me so I asked the guy a few times 'you take this flight all the time?' He said 'yep,' and this was followed by me saying 'this actual flight, you take it all the time?' He said 'YES, British Airways, 7 pm on a Thursday back to London Heathrow.' I asked one more time 'this actual flight?' and before I finished he said 'OK..... I suppose not THIS ACTUAL FLIGHT, not on this day, not this evening, not in this chair and I have never sat next to you before and I am beginning to wish I didn't!' I finally responded............. 'so this is your first time?' He laughed and said 'yep, I suppose it is.' After about 20 seconds of clear wondering, he then said 'funny, I feel excited about this flight now, how strange.'
The truth is that over 50% of our day runs on automatic. We are so caught up in using the 'computer' part of our brain and just going through the motions that we actually forget the E-motions of the experience we are having! It takes no emotion to repeat an action over and over again. For opening a door or tying my shoelaces I am pretty happy with doing this on autopilot. For LIFE itself, no two moments are ever the same.
So now you have 30 reasons TO DO something to start moving towards your dreams, instead of 300 reasons not to do something. All I ask is that if you have enjoyed reading this that you share with someone else who you feel will also benefit.
Wishing you nothing less than the best success, if it isn’t happening for you, stay true to yourself; keep moving forward and you will find a way.
